NHC Science Advisory Committee COMMITTEE CHARTER   1. Name: Science Advisory Committee 2. Authority:  The Science Advisory Committee (SAC) is a standing committee of the Northwest Horticultural Council (NHC) and serves at its pleasure.  It acts and communicates through the trustees and staff of the NHC. 3. Function:  To help identify and evaluate scientific issues affecting NHC represented products and to suggest strategies for dealing with these issues. To advise the staff of the NHC on how best to coordinate industry efforts with the state, university and federal levels of agricultural research. To give advice on the relative priority of agricultural research funding requests which may be pursued by the NHC. The committee is expected to give its advice to the Northwest Horticultural Council's trustees on other issues that they may refer to the committee from time to time. 4. Commodities Covered:  Apples, pears and cherries and other deciduous tree fruits raised in Idaho, Oregon or Washington and represented by the NHC. 5. Membership:  Committee membership is to be appointed from industry-at-large in accordance with the following allocations:  three to be selected by the Washington Apple Commission; two by the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission; one by the Idaho Apple Commission; one by the Washington State Fruit Commission;  two by the Fresh Pear Committee; two by the Wenatchee Valley Traffic Association; two by the Yakima Valley Growers-Shippers Association; one by the Columbia Gorge Fruit Growers;  one by the Oregon Sweet Cherry Commission; one by the Northwest Nursery Improvement Institute; one by the Washington State Horticultural Association; and seven to be appointed by the chairman of the NHC.  The manager of the Washington Tree Fruit Research Commission shall be an  ex officio member of the committee. Total membership:  No more than 25. Membership will be for two year terms. Members may be reappointed . Members of the committee will commit to paying all expenses, including travel costs that they may incur as a result of committee business. 6. Chairman:   The chairman of the Science Advisory Committee shall be appointed by the chairman of the NHC trustees. The SAC's chairman will be invited to attend each meeting of the NHC’s board of trustees. 7. Staff Coordination:   Employees of the NHC will serve as staff to the committee. 8. Frequency of meetings:  The Science Advisory Committee will meet at least once a year, and at such other times as the committee desires. 9.
